If you have a great sense of style and creativity, you should consider constructing quality custom jewelry wholesale for individual clients. If you are good at it, you will find that you have customers calling you over and over again to construct special pieces for them, or as gifts for others.
Making custom jewelry wholesale isn’t hard. Again, you need a sense of style and creativity – but the skills needed to make jewelry are very easy to learn. The object is to make your pieces unique – exclusive. When a client wears custom jewelry that you designed and constructed, they should wear it knowing that there is none other like it in the whole world !

Working with clients is actually the hardest part. You need to get a picture in your mind that matches the picture that is in their minds. Never construct the piece while they are watching – this is in effect teaching them how to do it themselves, and you will probably lose a customer. Never let them know just how easy it is! Talk at length with the client. This is the only way that you can design custom jewelry that matches
their likes, dislikes, and personality. If the piece is to be a gift for someone else, ask lots of questions about that person, and if possible, meet them in person yourself. Remember that uniqueness and exclusivity are the key to making this type of business successful – but great communication with the clients is vitally important as well.

Many clients will want you to make custom jewelry wholesale using stones or gems that they already have. They may even want you to just enhance a piece that they already have. Before you start doing this, make sure that you have the skill and qualifications necessary to do this work. You do not want to destroy a client’s beloved jewelry! Make sure that you ask about the history of the piece, and find out what special meaning that piece holds for your client as well. Of course, you will purchase the pieces that you need to make the custom jewelry from wholesale resources. Just make sure that you are buying quality parts – and look for sources for unique jewelry making supplies as well – imported pieces are great sources for uniqueness. You will have to quote your client a price before you start, so be careful here. You don’t want to lose money. Once you’ve quoted a price, deduct 15% to 30% from it. Think of the remainder as your ‘budget’ when buying supplies to make the custom jewelry .

As far back as the Neolithic era, humankind chose to carry unusual stones or a piece of wood as protection from enemies or evil spirits. During the time of the Egyptian pharaohs, the first recognizable charm bracelets and necklaces appeared. These were elaborate pieces of jewelry made of precious stones and metals. Charms were also used to identify an individual to the gods in the afterlife.

Much later during the Roman Empire, Christians identified one another with the “ichthys,” or fish charm, they carried beneath their garments to gain entry into secret worship meetings, held sometimes in the catacombs. Medieval kings and knights used charms with incantations for protection. Charms could also represent family origin, political standing and profession. During the Renaissance as superstitions faded, charms began to lose favor with the more wealthy and educated. However, in the early 20th century, it was Queen Victoria who began a charm bracelet trend among the European noble class during her reign. The Queen took to wearing a bracelet with tiny charm pictures of her children.

Charm bracelets again found an audience at the end of World War II. Soldiers returning home from overseas brought along trinkets made by local craftsmen to give their sweethearts. The charms represented miniature replicas of notable locations, such as the Eiffel Tower or Big Ben. Stateside jewelers quickly caught on to the trend and began fashioning charms for all occasions.

Within a decade, the charm bracelet was the must-have accessory for girls and women. Charm bracelets became popular gifts for 16th birthdays, graduations, weddings, and births of children. These tiny links to one’s personal history became deeply valued for their sentimental and material worth.

More recently, Italian charms became the rage at the turn of the Millennium. A departure from the traditional hanging trinkets, these bracelets snap into the bracelet rather than dangle from it. The flat, modular charms link together to form a bracelet, keychain or other accessory. Zoppini and Nomination are two popular makers of Italian charm bracelets. Fashion gurus like Louis Vuitton and Juicy Couture have also launched their own Italian charms.

Meanwhile, in both Europe and North America, a new modular charm bracelet trend has emerged. These modular bracelets consist of a chain onto which various beads or charms can be placed. Charms are made from gold, silver or Murano glass. The bracelet’s design allows the wearer to interchange the charms and create a totally unique look. Beads can also be worn on necklaces, rings and earrings to make a complete set.

The modular jewelry concept enjoyed acclaim in Europe before coming to the States. Inspired by Greek mythology, it combines versatility with fashion to establish beloved charm and bead bracelets. This jewelry concept also encourages creativity and individuality through its beautiful designs.

Women can create their own look and style for every whim or special moment. For example, you can design the Bohemian romantic, the elegant chic, the raw grace, the 60’s flower power, the charmed sophisticate, the billionaire, the simplistic minimalist, or the pure feminine. Modular jewelry can be used to reflect a change in mood or to express personality.

Gold has been valued by humanity since the dawn of civilization and gold jewelry never goes out of style. However, in order to make the best possible choice when buying gold jewelry it is good to know some of the basic facts as well as the “jargon” of the jewelry trade.

The first thing to know is that gold is as wearer-friendly as it is beautiful. Pure gold doesn’t react with other elements to create tarnish. While some people may have an allergy or staining problem with metals combined with gold, gold itself is rarely a problem.

Gold can be worked into most shapes ranging from tiny strands to very thin sheets. One ounce of gold can even be hammered into a thin sheet spreading out over ten feet square. In short, gold can be manipulated in virtually any way the jeweler or artist wants.

How Pure Is Your Gold? Gold is used in many ways and there are varying degrees of purity in gold jewelry. Gold jewelry is marked 18K, 14K, or 10K, with the K standing for karat.

The karat system is used to describe the percentage of pure gold in jewelry. The higher the karat number, the higher the percentage of gold:

24K gold is pure gold.

18K gold contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts of one or other metals, equaling 75% gold.

14K gold contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts of one or other metals, making it 58.3% gold.

12K gold contains 12 parts gold and 12 parts of one or other metals, making it 50% gold.

10K gold contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts of one or other metals, making it 41.7% gold.

In the United States , 10K gold is the minimum karat that can be called “gold.”

European Karat System

In Europe a different karat system is used to indicate the percentage of gold in a piece of jewelry. Here is the system:

18K gold is marked 750 to indicate 75% gold

14K gold is marked 585 for 58.5%

10K gold is marked 417 for 41.7%

There are other markings that are commonly found on gold. The karat marking should be accompanied by a hallmark or trademark identifying the maker and the country of origin is sometimes included as well.

Why Mix Other Metals With Gold? This is a good question. Pure gold is soft and it wouldn’t be practical for daily wear. Combining other metals with it makes the gold more durable and the jewelry less expensive. However, adding other metals changes color of the gold. For example by adding nickel a jeweler is able to create “white gold.” By adding copper the jeweler is able to create a “rose gold” with a pink tint, and when silver is added to gold it creates a greenish color.

Metals added to the gold result in an alloy. An alloy is the term given to a blended mixture of metals. However, the term “solid gold” can be used to describe jewelry of at least 10K in the U.S. In addition, a gold alloy of 18K or 14K can also be called “solid gold.”

Gold is also used as a coating which is placed on top of less expensive metals. There are many ways to coat another metal with gold and this generally reduces the cost of the item. The thicker the layer of gold that is applied, the less likely it is to wear away, and vice versa.

Gold-Filled Jewelry is the term given to jewelry that has a gold layer. Newer gold-filled items have markings which indicate how much and what type of gold is used for the layer. The typical marking is: 1/20 12K G.F which means that the item has at least 1/20th 12K gold by weight.

Gold Plated Jewelry is another term used to indicate jewelry with a gold layer on top of other metal. The gold layer in gold-plated jewelry is thinner than the layer in gold filled jewelry, and it wears away more quickly.

Finally there is a type of jewelry designated as “gold washed.” Here the layer of gold is very thin and it won’t last very long.

So, what should you buy? Solid gold is durable and the better choice if you wish to wear your jewelry on a regular basis, but it is very expensive. If you have allergies to nickel or other metals then you should choose jewelry that has a high gold content, such as 18K or 22K gold.

Gold filled or gold plated jewelry is suitable for occasional wear but everyday use would diminish the gold layer exposing the metal beneath it. This could stain the skin or result in an allergic reaction. So, if you want to have a lifetime of use then choose the highest quality of gold that you can afford.

Creating masterpieces on jewelry is child’s play for the Italian designers who spend their valuable time in sketching the designs and then applying them on the metals. Gold is said to be the frequently used metal on which their creativity speaks the language of royalty. Right from the trendy jewelries to the traditional ones, it is an Italian designer who can best mold the metals. For the women of today jewelry indeed is a concept of something funky and fashionable with the least intrusion of the bells and charms that were used as the decorative. Gold, which was once regarded as the jewelry for the D-day occasions has now turned to be a regular wear. Fashion changes color with time and the tastes of women also roll along with it. With the attempt to feed the needs of this change in fashion, designers are also storming their brains. Fashion jewelry for this matter always has an edge over the traditional and the so-called outdated ones. Italian designers have already earned the praise for their creativity right from the beginning of history and now they are just trying to modify it by producing something unique for the multi-tasking women of today.

The height of experimentation with the metals and the jewelries is carrying the designers to such an extent that they are trying to produce something exquisite by molding steel and ceramic also. They have delivered almost a mentionable change in the function and usages of the unique material that hardly had any implication in jewelry making. Coral is also often used in making designer jewelry. In fact the marriages between the coral and ceramic jewelry created by the Italian designers can look awesome and trendy on any woman irrespective of her skin color. You can get to see the sample of such an interesting piece of work with Vivace jewelry which on purchase can be shipped to the address given free of cost. These modern designers can custom make the jewelry for your make over.

They also present some of the excellent collection on the rings and bracelets that can even look attractive on the men. Fashionable jewelry that the teenagers and the office goers love to put on is mostly light and cheaper. The risk that they try to avoid while in precious jewelry items can easily be avoided when they are wearing cheap fashionable jewelry designed by the Italian designers. These designers are trying their best to show their craftsmanship through the magic effects that they can produce with the help of ceramic, coral along with other imitation metals. Color is a primary factor when ceramic jewelry is concerned. These jewelries have to be painted according to the need of the stylish women of today. Pearl can also be an excellent element to be used up as pendant. The creative brain of the designer decides the style in which it has to be inserted. The designers can use ceramic to create excellent pieces of necklace, bracelets and earrings. There is a lot of scope to experiment with the earrings as they are small and can be shaped in any way you feel like.

The best part of the Italian jewelry is that the designers posses the capacity to make any dull metal graceful, with their touch. This group of Midas is innovative in whatever metal or material they work on. Sterling silver can add a new meaning so that it can tell the untold story. Silver existed long back but moving with time is a wise decision and jewelry is just a part of such movement. Colored ornamental earrings are effective when they are hand glazed. The working women of today love to put on only that particular type of jewelry that can glorify them and make them look awesome. The Italian jewelries are also unparallel when it comes to designing of costume jewelry and vintage jewelry. It is only a sketch that produces the ultimate magic shining on the curves of women’s body. Wedding ceremonies are absolutely incomplete without the junk fusion collections with the glittering stones of increasing denominations studded on them in ascending order. Amethyst glass crystal beads are heavy and produce an elegant look when they are put on with orange or saffron apparels. They present a sense of holiness, which gets reflected on the face of the woman wearing it. The Italian Designers are also expert in creating designs on brooches.

These were used long before but with the change in style their uses have diminished and hence, the designers are trying to recreate them by giving some different forms, shapes and sizes to them. Gold items in 14 to 22 carats are light. They are simply just capable of attracting any women. They look ethnic and have the fragrance of elegance. The Italian designers have also experienced art while playing with the white gold, which is precious and unique in itself with the touch of elegance. Crystals are auspicious for they reflect the light that falls on them and also makes you glow. It is the Italian jewelry designers who can make fruitful use of the crystals.

They can use it simply by hanging beautiful crystals with the prominent edges from a chocker or can gather various colors of it to create a multi-colored crystal necklace. Leather is modified with cutter convenience to make the bracelets for the teenage boys and girls. In fact, bracelets more like the bangles can produce an exclusiveness that is desired by everyone. Body piercing jewelry can also have a major outlet in the form of the nose rings, naval rings and eyebrow rings. Though they are not of much artistic value yet to make them unique some amount of design definitely has to be inserted. Fashionable jewelries that are used in matching with the apparels are mostly made up of cheap metals, which the working women prefer the most. So, most of the Italian designer jewelries for regular use are being created on these types of imitation or easily available materials.

The history of pearls being used as jewelry is far older than most people think. In China, the first pearl used as an offering for the emperor can be traced back to 2000 years ago. In those days pearls were considered the most valuable treasure, and royalty was keen on owning them. Royalty not only wore pearls as accessories, but also used a large amount of them to decorate their crowns, furniture and even their tomb. According to historical record, 20,000 pearls were found in Queen Dowager Cixi’s tomb and one pearl on her crown was “as big as an egg”! The pearls in these older times were all natural. The royalty’s extravagance and natural pearls’ rarity resulted in pearl-hunting workers’ having a difficult life. In old days, the only way to seek for pearls was to dive into the water. Many workers were injured or died while in the hunt for pearls. The difficulty in finding pearls made them more special than any other kinds of jewelry.

In Europe, during the middle ages, pearls became a fashion item among royalty and nobles. They believed that pearls symbolized purity, peace and beauty for women, and could protect male soldiers in wars. For emperors, pearls were the symbol of power and majesty. In some countries common people were even banned to wear pearls.

Because of humanity’s excessive pearl-hunting, pearls eventually became very rare. In the 19th century the discovery of diamonds in Brazil helped cause pearls to slowly loose popularity. In modern times with the introduction and development of pearl cultivation, cultured pearl production became a new and fast growing industry. Including sea pearls and freshwater pearls, cultured pearls are so much easier to obtain than natural pearls. As a result pearls have gradually been gaining back their popularity again. The difference from the olden times is that pearls are not only for royalty any more, but affordable and accessible for all classes of people. Color, shape, size and the design of pearls are much more various and diverse than ever.

Factors to consider when selecting pearl jewelry

Firstly, you need to decide which type of pearls you want. Freshwater pearls are more varied in color and shape than saltwater pearls. Freshwater pearls are not as shinny as saltwater pearls in luster, although some high quality items are already becoming an alternative to seawater pearls.

Secondly, you need to know the quality factors. No matter whether you prefer freshwater pearls or saltwater pearls, the factors to consider are always luster, shape, size, surface perfection and nacre thickness. The pearls higher in luster, rounder in shape, bigger in size, smoother in surface or thicker in nacre, are always the ones considered higher in quality. When you are checking a piece of jewelry, you can put it under the lights or compare it with another one. In fact extremely high quality pearls are very rare and very expensive, so there is no need to always search for the best quality. Rather it is best to purchase the ones you like and best suit you.

Thirdly, the style you choose should be suitable for your age, look, personality, job, and occasions where you are going to wear it. Young ladies may choose more colorful jewelry, while elder ladies may look at the comparatively more simple items, but that can vary according to the person and the occasion.

Caring for your pearl jewelry

It is better if you clean your jewelry after each time after you wear it. Avoid using high alkaline cleaners or cleaning it in an ultrasonic cleaner. Just wipe them off with a soft cloth or wash them in a mild soap such as Ivory or Lux liquid. When you don’t wear them, keep them in jewelry pouches or soft cloth bags, and away from heaters or sunlight. To avoid broken strings, pearl jewelry should be restrung regularly, ideally once a year, but it may depend on how often it is worn.

The earliest bracelets date back to around 2500 BC and were those worn by the Sumerians in southern Mesopotamia. Bracelets, necklaces, anklets, finger rings and ear rings made the women of Sumer into show windows of their husband’s prosperity. Bracelets were found in the tombs of Ur where it was customary to bury royalty with their jewelry and unfortunately their poor servants.

By about 2000 BC, in Ancient Egypt, bracelets emerged as major pieces of jewelry. Bracelets were found in the ruins from the Vesuvias eruption in Pompeii in 79 AD.

It was during the age of the Egyptian Pharaohs that charm bracelets were first seen although charms themselves dated back as far as the Neolithic era when men would gather unusual bits of wood or pieces of stone which would be carried about their person in order to ward off their enemies. So these charms were considered ‘lucky charms’ and powerful protectors against evil.

It wasn’t until the time of the Pharaohs though that these charms were incorporated into elaborate pieces of jewelry such as wrist and neck bracelets which were not only deemed to offer protection but were also a sign of how prosperous the person had been in life and after death would be an indicator to the Gods of this persons proper status in the after life.

In Grecian times bracelets were popular with men and soldiers wore defensive bands of leather, often decorated with gold, silver and or gemstones, on their forearms. They were known as ‘Bracels,’ from the Latin Brachium, meaning, ‘arm.’ When women caught on that these Bracels would look great on them, they started wearing smaller versions, called little Bracels…or ‘Bracel-ets.’

The history of bracelets stretches forward through the Middle Ages of medieval Europe through the Baroque period of the 18th century, and on right through to the present.

Throughout time, bracelets have been made from many different materials such as leather, iron, copper, beads, bone and teeth as well as precious metals and gemstone.

Throughout the ages bracelets have always been popular and the styles seem to have varied according to dress styles. In cultures where people wore sleeveless or short sleeved attire such as the Romans and ancient Greeks, the wearing of bracelets both on the upper and lower arm became popular with both men and women. The wearing of upper arm bracelets is still popular today with modern fashionable skimpy clothing lending itself well to the wearing of more jewelry.

Today, bracelets are worn by both men and women in a variety of materials such as traditional precious metals like gold silver and platinum. Modern plastics and acrylics are now much used to make trendy, unusual bracelets as well as metals like titanium and zirconium which have become popular because they are hard wearing, very light and hypoallergenic. Whatever your tastes and whatever your budget, there is an enormous choice of bracelets and bangles to suit everyone.

Cleaning Gems

To keep your gemstone jewelry looking its best, it is necessary to clean it regularly. There are many methods with which to clean gemstones, and each gem will react differently to particular cleaning methods. Some methods should be avoided entirely for specific gemstones, therefore it is important to clean each type of gem using the proper techniques.

First, let us look at the various methods of cleaning available and then we shall detail the best methods for cleaning each particular gemstone, and which methods to avoid.

Methods For Cleaning Gemstones

By far the simplest method of cleaning is to dampen a soft cloth with warm water and wipe the gem clean. This is certainly the least intense and safest technique to use, and it can be particularly useful in cleaning pieces that are fragile and that don’t take well to other cleaning methods.

Soaking the gemstone in soapy water for several minutes, then gently cleaning with a cloth or soft-bristle brush is another method that is generally safe to use for all gemstones and can be necessary to use when other techniques are not suitable. When cleaning with a brush take care not to dislodge loose stones or otherwise damage the piece. When finished, rinse the piece thoroughly then carefully dry.

Dipping or soaking the jewelry in ammonia solution and then cleaning with a cloth or brush is a more effective method of cleaning dirtier gems and is suitable for use on many types of gemstones. However some will react badly with the ammonia if used, and so using only soapy water is sometimes necessary. When finished, be sure to rinse and then dry the piece properly.

Sonic and ultrasonic cleaning utilises small devices to clean the jewelry using tiny vibrations. Sonic cleaners are more commonly found in households and are the cheaper of the two devices, whereas ultrasonic cleaners are much more powerful and more expensive and are generally used by professional and commercial jewelers. Particular care should be taken when using an ultrasonic cleaner, as these can have a damaging effect on some gems. See the list below for more information, and when in doubt avoid using this method.

Jewelry steam cleaners can also be purchased which rely on heated tap water to clean the jewelry. Another method requiring no special equipment is boiling. This is done by placing the jewelry in a strainer and submerging it in a pan of water, ensuring that the jewelry does not touch the bottom of the pan. Bring the water up to boiling point slowly and let it boil for approximately 10-15 minutes. Take particular care to avoid sudden changes in temperature as these can fracture and damage the jewelry- never immerse jewelry in already boiling water and once you have cleaned the jewelry, allow it to soak in the water until it returns to almost room temperature. Never cool the piece off with cold water.

As these last two methods use extreme heat to clean the gemstones, they are unsuitable for many gems and care should be taken.

The list below provides guidance, tips and precautions for cleaning different types of gemstones.

Alexandrite

Do not use heat cleaning methods and undertake sonic cleaning with care. Ammonia and soapy water both work well when cleaning Alexandrite.

Amethyst

Avoid boiling, steam cleaning or ultrasonic methods. Instead, soak in soapy water or ammonia, or use a small sonic cleaner.

Aquamarine

Do not use heat or ultrasonic methods. Cleaning with soapy water or ammonia solution are the most suitable for Aquamarine.

Citrine

Avoid heating and ultrasonic cleaning. It is recommended to use either ammonia solution or soapy water.

Diamond

It is generally ok to use steaming, boiling and ultrasonic methods with Diamond jewelry, as well as the less intense methods. However fracture-filled Diamonds should not be cleaned using these methods, and should instead be cleaned using ammonia or soapy water. If in doubt, use the less intense techniques.

Emerald

Never use heating or ultrasonic methods as these can remove stone treatments. Avoid ammonia or other solutions. It is highly recommended that you use only soapy water or a damp cloth.

Garnet

Heating methods are best avoided. Ultrasonic and sonic cleaning is ok, but this should be done with care. Soapy water and ammonia work well.

Onyx (Chalcedony)

When cleaning Onyx, use only soapy water or a damp cloth. Other methods may damage the jewelry.

Opal

The only safe cleaning technique for Opal is soapy water or a damp cloth, as Opal gemstones are particularly prone to fractures.

Pearl

Unlike the other gems in this list, Pearl is not a mineral, it is an organic substance produced by living creatures, therefore it is particularly soft and delicate. Only use soapy water or a damp cloth to clean Pearls as any other method may result in damage.

Peridot

As with Opal and Pearl, the only safe cleaning method for Peridot is soapy water or a damp cloth.

Quartz

Do not use heated cleaning methods, and undertake ultrasonic cleaning with care. Ammonia and soapy water methods work fine.

Ruby

Rubies can be cleaned using heat and ultrasonic methods and any of the less intense methods.

Sapphire

It is safe to clean Sapphire with any of the methods listed including boiling, steaming and ultrasonic cleaning.

Tanzanite

When cleaning Tanzanite, use only soapy water or a damp cloth.

Topaz

Topaz is particularly sensitive to fractures caused by heat or vibration, so it is highly recommended to only use soapy water or a damp cloth when cleaning.

Tourmaline

Avoid heat and ultrasonic methods. Soapy water or ammonia is most appropriate for Tourmaline gemstones.

Tsavorite

Tsavorite can be cleaned using an ultrasonic cleaner, but do not use heat cleaning methods as this can result in cracking. It is safest to simply use soapy water or a damp cloth.

Turqoise

Use only soapy water or a damp cloth when cleaning turqoise.

Costume jewelry is often created with non-precious metals, usually gold or silver plated, and with or without beads and stones. Costume jewelry has been extremely popular around the world for thousands of years. The Ancient Egyptians are known to have worn decorative beaded necklaces and Cleopatra is probably one of the original wearers of what we now call costume jewelry. In more recent times the people of the Germanic and Slovak regions became highly skilled at developing intricate patterns in glass beads. However, beadwork used in costume jewelry is not only limited to glass.

A large variety of materials are traditionally used to make beads such as jet, wood, amber, gemstones, pottery, ceramic, metals, horn, coral, ivory, tortoiseshell and pearls. Some modern materials such as plastics, nylon and even polycarbonate variants are also used to make beads. Costume jewelry can be antique, period, or contemporary and there are many collectors of every style of costume jewelry. Venetian glass pieces of costume jewelry are particularly collectable as well as being extremely popular for people to wear.

Cleaning costume jewelry is extremely simple but needs to be done on a regular basis to prevent tarnishing. Simply use a mild detergent mixed in water to keep your costume jewelry in good condition. It is important not to soak the jewelry and to make sure that you dry it thoroughly before storing it. You can buy anti-tarnish paper for wrapping your costume jewelry in before you put it away for long periods of time but regular cleaning is the best defense against tarnishing. The tarnishing of costume jewelry is typically caused by the metal reacting with the atmosphere and oxidizing.

Unfortunately, there are a large number of people who are unable to wear costume jewelry next to their skin. This is because of their sensitivity to the metals used. It is important to make sure that anyone that you are buying the jewelry for is not allergic to nickel or copper, especially with pierced earrings. Costume jewelry may look beautiful and, especially in the case of contemporary pieces, be reasonably priced but it is not suitable for everyone to wear. For many people a piece of costume jewelry may be the first jewelry that they have worn and it is important to look out for signs of a reaction, especially after extended periods of wear. Often people will not show a reaction if they wear the jewelry for a short amount of time and this can be an ideal way to avoid any possible discomfort. You can also buy a special coating that you apply to the back of the costume jewelry to protect the skin from having direct contact with the metal.

The history behind of Beads jewelry back to 18 th century where people in Europe !
What do you think the earliest recorded use of beads is ‚ is your first thought perhaps beadwork created by the Egyptians? Yes, there certainly were a lot of beaded items in Egyptian times, but beadwork has been found dating back to the Stone Age (the Upper Paleolithic period). Beads were added to rudimentary clothing; these beads were made of shells and ivory. Of course, the beads weren’t as finely crafted as later beads, but still, they were beads. So even in caveman times, men and women were interested in improving their clothing and appearance with the use of beads.

The beads that we tend to think of as traditional beadwork are called seed beads ‚ because of their small size they resemble seeds. These beads were used in early beadwork ‚ the work of the Egyptians.

The Egyptians used a type of bead called faience beads. Our seed beads today are made of glass, but Egyptians were using beads long before the invention of glass. Their faience beads were made from quartz particles fused together. A glaze was applied over the quartz. The beads were then woven or strung into a variety of jewelry and clothing.

Beaded necklaces were found in the tomb of King Tut. Other beaded items in his tomb were a pair of slippers he perhaps wore as a child and a hassock. It’s unusual for ancient beadwork to survive since it was strung on cords made from leather and cloth, which tend to disintegrate with age. We are fortunate to have these few examples to give us a perspective on the history of Egyptian beading.

Some religious texts from India refer to beads being woven into hair and into horse’s tails. These references were recorded around the 9th century BC. And beads were also widely used throughout Asia in ancient times. There were beaded items found in temples in Japan that date back to 800 A.D. Early beads were fashioned from shells, ivory and stone. Early Egyptians valued the beads according to the stone that was used to create the beads. Different stones were thought to have different properties.

Lapis Lazuli, a beautiful blue stone, was believed to protect the wearer’s health. This stone was often fashioned into beads, as were carnelian, feldspar, amethyst, turquoise and jasper ‚ many of the same stones we use today.

Glass was introduced as a component of beads around 1480, when Venice began drawing glass tubes and turning them into beads. Once the technology for pulling glass tubes was invented, it was easy to suddenly produce thousands of beads, all uniform in size, color and shape.

Modern jewelry and beading certainly benefits from the advances made in the production of beads, but there’s no doubt that even today, an individually handcrafted bead can be the star attraction of any beading piece.
